500 attend Karachi workshop promoting sustainable living

Karachi: Karachi’s Administrator Laeeq Ahmed said that the people of the city should make good use of their household organic waste for tree plantation and kitchen gardening to promote sustainable living in the provincial capital.

A workshop in this regard was held at Sir Syed Park of Federal B Area of Karachi under the aegis of Parks and Horticulture Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

Over 500 citizens attended the workshop who were informed about the methods to use household organic waste as fertilizer for kitchen gardening. Noted horticulturist Toufeeq Pasha conducted the workshop.

Director-General, Parks of KMC, Taha Saleem said on the occasion that such workshops would also be conducted in other neighbourhoods of the city to promote the methods of sustainable living among people of the city.

Karachi Administrator was of the viewpoint that municipal waste produced in the city should be classified so to recycle its useful components for doing tree plantation.

He said that people of the big cities around the world were given such training to do kitchen gardening as it was also helpful in reducing the expenses on collection and disposal of the municipal waste.

In this regard, all the public parks of KMC are being used to generate compost to do further greenery in Karachi. This practice is also helping the city’s municipal authority to do saving on fertilizer cost for tree plantation.

Workshops every week

Such workshops will be held in any of the public parks of Karachi every other week. The participants would get the opportunity to grow vegetable for their household use in any portion of their house by using the food waste as fertilizer.

This will help the concerned citizens to produce less household waste so to keep the environment in their surroundings neat and clean.

The KMC official appealed to the citizens to attend these workshops in large number in pursuance of their civic responsibilities so to take part in the efforts to promote plantation and keep the city clean.

It is worth mentioning here that Karachi faces a major challenge in the form of nearly 14,000 tonnes of waste generated in the city daily as a proper system is lacking for its disposal.
