CAIRO: Egypt has welcomed the formation of the new Libyan executive authority and expressed its aspiration to work with the interim body.

A spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Hafez, said that Cairo hailed the results of the vote determining the executive authority by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum held in Geneva under the auspices of the UN.

Cairo looked forward to working with the Libyan interim authority until the handover of power to the elected government after the poll scheduled for December this year, he said.

The spokesman praised the efforts of the UN in sponsoring the political process in Libya.

Hafez called on international and regional parties to support this peaceful path to settle the crisis in a way that would contribute to restoring stability in Libya and lead to the end of foreign interference in its affairs.

The UN Mission for Support in Libya announced the victory of the Mohammad Younes Menfi list, headed by the interim executive authority in the country.

UN Envoy to Libya Stephanie Williams said that the list of Mohammad Younes Menfi won the presidency of the new interim executive authority in Libya, with Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba heading the government, after obtaining 39 votes. This compared to 34 for the list of Aguila Saleh.

After announcing the outcome, Williams said that the international community would support the election results and monitor whoever was elected. The next Libyan government must obtain the confidence of Parliament within 21 days, she said.
