Karachi to get central public library

Karachi: Karachi’s Administrator Iftikhar Ali Shallwani has announced that a central public library will soon be established in Karachi.

The city’s administrator stated this as he received a donation of 3,000 books for the street library at Metropole area and for Frere Hall library in Karachi. The Lions Club International donated these books.

Shallwani expressed gratitude to the Lions Club for donating the books. The Lions Club announced to establish a street library in Multan to be named after the incumbent Karachi administrator for promoting a book culture among people of the city.

Shallwani urged other philanthropic, welfare and commercial institutions to donate books and provide resources to establish street libraries in different areas of the city. He said a street library had been established in the underprivileged Lyari area of Karachi. Another library is being set up in North Nazimabad area of the city.

He said efforts were on to restore and upgrade government-managed public libraries in the city. One such recently revived facility is the public library in the colonial-era building of Frere Hall in downtown of Karachi.

Pakistan’s first street library near the Metropole road intersection of Karachi was inaugurated on December 25, 2019 with 600 books.
